Wongdaeng y Higgins (2022) — pasajes subrayados

🔵 Definiciones y conceptos operativos

  • «In educational terms, it is students’ awareness of their own strengths and weaknesses as learners and their ability to use such awareness strategically to direct their learning (Quigley, Muijs, and Stringer 2018).»
  • «The processes where the awareness of one’s personal knowledge, task knowledge and available strategies are exercised, such as goal setting, activating background knowledge, strategic planning, positive self-talk, monitoring and self-reflection, are considered metacognitive regulation or metacognitive strategies.»

🟡 Ideas principales

  • «The findings from this review also support this argument. Moreover, most successful studies have a clear sequence for applying metacognitive components in language classrooms. The most common models are the CALLA model by Chamot and O’Malley (1994) for reading and other skills, the MPS by Vandergrift (2004) for listening and the KWL model by Ogle (1989) for reading.»
  • «Despite knowledge and understanding of metacognition being important, what seems to be more vital is the regulation of the skills related to such knowledge via planning, monitoring and reflection.»

  • «The review attempted to include all relevant studies published from 1990 to 2019.»
  • «The quality appraisal criteria in this review were adapted from Gorard (2014)‘s ‘sieve’ for research findings and the EEF (2019)‘s classification of security of findings.»
  • «The identified 2,942 studies underwent deduplication and the first screening by titles and abstracts. The studies which did not comply with the inclusion criteria were removed, leaving 52 for further screening.»

🟢 Confirmaciones y evidencia

  • «Most of the effects (28/32) are larger than 0.4, which are considered desirable in education (Hattie 2009). Overall, the average effect size of the included studies is 1.33 which is a large effect size.»
  • «The results substantially favoured the intervention group with an effect size of 1.50. The researchers emphasised guiding students when and how to employ strategies over the knowledge of strategies.»
  • «The materials can be in different forms such as handouts, portfolios or diaries. The materials should encourage students’ practice of metacognitive regulation.»

  • «very small sample sizes, the chances of the results being inflated are highly plausible (Coe 2002). Therefore, a firm conclusion about the effectiveness from the results cannot be made.»
  • «In Figure 2, the I2 value suggests that the heterogeneity of the included studies is very high (94.85%), in line with what we observed from the eyeball test.»
  • «Figure 3 shows that the distribution of the effects does not form an inverted funnel curve and numerous effects fall out of the estimated funnel curve. This illustrates the existence of publication bias in the obtained result.»
  • «The first and major one relates to the eligibility criteria. The review used pre-specified criteria for records screening. However, the criteria were not recorded anywhere, such as in a review protocol, which would have enhanced the validity of the method.»

  • «Simply teaching about metacognitive knowledge and strategies may not be sufficient because ample opportunities to exercise them are essential for developing metacognitive regulation (Tavakoli and Koosha 2016).»
  • «In summary, the above results indicate the promising potential of the interventions but cannot yet securely affirm their consistent effectiveness due to the limitations in terms of the design, scale and risks to validity in the included studies.» Evita sobrevender y justifica reformular «influye».
